  • The earthquake and Chilean berries

According to Felipe Rosas of Rconsulting S.A./Triplenlace, two months after the February 27 earthquake in Chile the raspberry harvest finished with a production loss of 4,000 pounds. The drop in production could be traced in part to a cold spring (September 2009), which resulted in harvest delays of 15 to 20 days. But the major reason for the reduction was a week of no harvest caused by the earthquake.

The final production estimate is 100,000,000 pounds, 20% less than last season. Eighty percent was exported as frozen all qualities, 10% was juice and 7% was sent fresh by air to the United State with 3% sold in the domestic market. Median price for the grower for frozen was $0.64; for juice, $0.36; and for fresh $1.70.

In June, 2008, the WRRC represented USA raspberry production at the 6th International Raspberry Organization conference held in Poland. Each participating country prepared a short presentation describing raspberry production in their country and issues surrounding their industry. Several of the presentations are included on this site (the list below links to PDF files of the PowerPoint presentations; some are quite large and may take a while to download). The IRO holds conferences every two years with the next conference scheduled for 2010 in Chile. (Presentations from the 5th International Raspberry Association conference held in Serbia in early June, 2006, can be found in the archives.)
